There is a third option, however, called a rangetop, which is essentially just a cooktop with the knobs and buttons placed on the front.

How about below on the island that way someone can be busy on the main wall yet someone could quickly use the microwave and not be in the way. Sounds like your on top of things though, have fun and it will all be great in the end I feel like in photos we rarely see hoods wider than the cooktop, though that is optimal? Are all the inspiration kitchens doing it wrong? Also, I disagree with not replacing appliances before the rest of the kitchen - better performance appliances can make a world of difference in day to day use of the space even if it does look weird.
We currently have a Bosch dishwasher and a Miele fridge in a s horrible kitchen because the dishwasher and fridge needed to be replaced and we figured we might as well go with the ones we like rather than something cheap to be replaced when the kitchen is redone.
That said, we are very much keeping in mind full kitchen renovation options when purchasing said appliances. We don't have a layout set in stone yet for the new kitchen, but we have it whittled down to a couple of options really with the space there aren't that many choices so it is easy enough to go 'okay, where would this go if we did this? What about with that plan? Obviously we do not want to spend money on a high end range and hood combo now only to decide to go with the cooktop and wall ovens later.
Also, I do want to go from 30" to 36" if it'll fit with required clearance for the specific range, and there is no way to fit a 36" suitable hood in the current space. So we will only replace the range once we decide what we want to do or if it gives up for good - and if the replacement is forced it might be a cheaper one that does the job as a temporary fix.

If so, you might want to avoid the heat radiating from an oven. Do you frequently transfer dishes from the stovetop to finish in the oven? Proximity is important in this case. How close do you want your pots and pans to your appliance? Do you have back issues? Hauling heavy pots out of a range oven can be burdensome. A wall oven at arm and eye height is likely a better choice for those with bad knees or backs. Be mindful, however, of wall oven placement in relation to your height.
If the oven is placed too high, your forearms are at risk of getting burned, and reaching into the oven might not be possible, forcing you into an awkward spot at the side of the oven.
