Completely unexpectedly, and after a few drinks, Henry challenged Francis to a wrestling match, but was easily defeated. He did, however, best the French king at archery. This was a real event that rocked London in the 16th century. Sources disagree about what precisely sparked the riot, says Dr Joanne Paul, writing for HistoryExtra. In reality, Catherine and Henry were not returning from France at this time and did not get caught up in the riots; the royal family was 10 miles from the heart of London, at their palace in Richmond.
But it is true that Catherine intervened to gain a pardon for or so of the agitators. Though the head of one rioter, John Lincoln, was displayed as a reminder and a warning against further uprising. Henry sent her away from court in retaliation. Catherine was increasingly marginalised and eventually cast aside by , in favour of her lady-in-waiting Anne Boleyn.
As Henry sought an annulment to his marriage, Catherine was subjected to a protracted process of humiliation and heartbreak while she fought to prove her fidelity to Henry and insist that she was the rightful queen. Henry officially married Anne Boleyn in January , although they had probably already married secretly at Dover in November Find out more here. Elinor Evans is digital editor of HistoryExtra.

Sign me up! The physicians there at the time believed Arthur to have died of a strangely acting TB, which atypical CF would mimic, and pnemonia would likewise be a complication on atypical CF.
I address these issues in more detail in my book. I thought I read that Katherine was also sick with the same thing and came close to dying herself. Could it be also atypical CF? I read your book on Edward vi , and I suggest you edit the part where you mention Edwards first cousins, Edward and Henry Suffolk, were the sons of Mary Tudor. They were actually the sons of Catherine Willoughby. Have any of you come across this theory?

After a long and difficult labour, Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter named Katherine on the 2nd of February at the Tower of London.

After his death, Arthur Tudor's body was disembowelled, filled with spices and embalmed. The body lay in state until the 23rd of April, when it was taken to a local parish where three masses were said. Then on the 25th of April, in the pouring rain, Arthur's coffin was taken with great ceremony and dignity forty miles to Worchester Cathedral.
The weather was so bad that the cart carrying the Prince's coffin repeatedly got stuck in the mud and oxen were used to haul the cart out. At Worcester Cathedral, the late Arthur Tudor received a funeral befitting his status.
Around five hundred and fifty people were involved and almost yards of black mourning cloth was bought. Over a thousand candles burned using up around pounds of candle wax! Great prayers were said for the young Prince's soul and the coffin was buried in the south end of the high altar. William Smith, bishop of Lincoln, cast holy water and dirt into the grave and the comptrollers of Arthur's household broke their white staffs and placed them into the grave as a sign of respect.
Henry VII ordered a great tomb to be erected in his son's memory. With Arthur's death, his younger brother Henry became heir to the English throne.
